Municipal and Government Fuel Equipment
This page covers municipal fuel storage and dispensing for city and county fleets, public works, water and sewer utilities, schools and other public agencies. Public sites often keep fuel close to buildings and staff, so a typical setup uses a fire-rated or double wall tank, a metered dispenser and spill containment. Larger yards add bulk storage and fill-point equipment.
How to choose
- Fire rating: public sites often need UL-2085 fire-rated tanks, especially for gasoline or tanks near buildings. Confirm with your fire marshal.
- Metering: a fuel dispenser with a digital meter supports fuel tracking by vehicle or department.
- Capacity: larger yards move to bulk fuel tanks. Plan for the EPA SPCC rule, which can apply above 1,320 gallons of oil products stored above ground.
- Fill point: add overfill prevention and a spill container at the fill, as many codes require.
Common questions

Do public fuel tanks need approval?
Usually. The local fire marshal reviews tank type and placement, and some states also require tank registration. Check before you order.
